Steersman
STEERZ-man
Paddler RoleWhat is a Steersman?
The steersman (also called the steerer or simply seat 6) is the paddler positioned at the very back of an OC6 outrigger canoe. While the rest of the crew drives the canoe forward, the steersman's primary job is to navigate and steer — using a longer steering paddle to control the direction of the canoe and keep it on the optimal line through the water.
The steersman is the voice of the crew. They call "hut" commands to signal when the crew should switch paddle sides, read the approaching water to choose the best course, and communicate with the crew throughout the race or training session. In open-ocean racing, the steersman must make split-second decisions about which swells to catch, which channels to take, and when to adjust course.
The steersman is almost always one of the most experienced paddlers in a club — someone who understands the canoe, the ocean, and the crew deeply enough to manage all of these responsibilities simultaneously while still contributing to the boat's forward propulsion.
Responsibilities of the Steersman
The steersman carries more responsibilities than any other seat in the canoe:
- Navigation: Choosing the racing line, identifying the best route through a course, and reading buoys, currents, and wind conditions to make route decisions in real time.
- Steering: Using the steering paddle (longer than standard paddling blades) to keep the canoe on the intended line. In rough water, this requires constant micro-corrections.
- Calling huts: Announcing when the crew should switch their paddle sides. Timing hut calls correctly maintains speed and prevents the canoe from veering off course. A poorly timed hut can cost significant time in a race.
- Reading ocean conditions: In open-water races, the steersman scouts incoming swells and currents to position the canoe to surf waves and pick up free speed — one of the most skill-dependent aspects of ocean paddling.
- Crew communication: Keeping the crew motivated, adjusting the paddling strategy mid-race, and relaying information between the front and back of the canoe.
- Boat management: Monitoring the canoe's balance, especially in rough conditions where the ama may lift out of the water, and adjusting crew positioning or paddling to stabilize the hull.
Skills Required
Becoming an effective steersman takes years of experience on the water. Key skills include:
- Ocean literacy: The ability to read swells, currents, wind chop, and changing weather conditions and translate that into real-time navigational decisions.
- Timing and rhythm: Knowing precisely when to call huts to maximize crew efficiency and canoe speed.
- Leadership and calm under pressure: The steersman sets the tone for the crew. Staying composed in chaotic ocean conditions — while steering, navigating, and communicating — requires genuine mental fortitude.
- Paddle technique: A steersman's steering strokes must be efficient enough to redirect the canoe without significantly slowing it down. Poor technique wastes energy and loses time.
- Knowledge of the crew: Understanding each paddler's strengths, fatigue levels, and tendencies allows a skilled steersman to adjust hut timing and communication style to get the best out of each person.
Steersman vs. Stroker
The steersman and the stroker (seat 1) are the two leadership roles in an OC6. They work in tandem — the stroker leads from the front, and the steersman leads from the back.
- Stroker (Seat 1): Sets the paddling pace and rhythm. All five other paddlers follow the stroker's blade. The stroker must maintain a consistent, powerful stroke rate and adapt to conditions without breaking the crew's synchrony. The stroker faces forward and focuses entirely on paddling.
- Steersman (Seat 6): Steers and navigates. Calls huts and manages the overall race strategy. The steersman can see the whole crew and the course ahead, making them the crew's strategic brain.
A great OC6 crew has a tight connection between the stroker and the steersman — the stroker drives the engine, and the steersman points it in the right direction.
Assigning a Steersman with Va'a Sync
For coaches, selecting and assigning the right steersman is one of the most important decisions before any race or training session. Va'a Sync makes this easy — coaches can assign seat 6 (and all other seats) directly in the app, see which qualified steersmen are confirmed for a session, and notify the full crew once the lineup is set. When a steersman needs to be swapped last minute, the lineup can be updated instantly and the affected paddlers are notified automatically.
